After touting a late summer opening for some time, the Legends Bay Casino in Sparks finally has an official grand opening date.

The Legends Bay Casino will officially open to the public at 8 p.m. Aug. 30, the company confirmed on Wednesday. The opening date was first reported by the Reno Gazette Journal last week in an article about Circa Sports.

In addition to its grand opening, Legends Bay Casino will also hold a fireworks show on Sept. 2.

“It’s an honor and a privilege for us to open the first new casino in Northern Nevada in a very long time,” said Garry Goett, Olympia Companies chairman and CEO, in a statement. “We have been working tirelessly to bring this project to life for many years.”

The opening marks the first new, ground-up casino in Reno-Sparks in more than two decades. It also represents the end of a 15-year journey to get the project completed as it faced challenges ranging from a major recession and pandemic to minimum room requirements and even pushback from some politicians and potential rivals.

“We found a grandfathered gaming license in Sparks that was actually movable from one location to another,” Court Cardinal, regional president of Olympia Gaming, said in June. “So we purchased that gaming license.”

“One thing I’ll tell you is that it’s been a long time coming,” Cardinal said.

The second annual Legends of Beer Festival combines the best that Reno-Tahoe has to offer including outdoor recreation and craft beer/food. Our main sponsors, Visit Reno-Tahoe and The Outlets at Legends are proud to host you at this one-of-a-kind festival.
It all starts with a “beer-mile” relay competition that pits 4-person teams against one another to complete the beer mile (drink 1 mystery beer, run 1/4 mile, and make the handoff).
The festival follows the beer-mile relay and features more than 30 craft breweries including local and regional breweries. There will be additional craft beverages other than beer including canned cocktails, mead, cider, and seltzer. There will also be craft non-alcoholic beverage options available for DD’s or those who choose no alcohol.

Very Important Drinker (VID) ticket holders get early access including at least 4 beers not available to GA ticket holders. VID’s will also have front row viewing of the beer mile relay race.
General Admission to the festival includes unlimited beer tastings starting at 1pm.
There will be several food trucks on site as well as access to additional restaurants within the Outlets at Legends.
There are discounted festival prices for “Beer Mile” relay teams as well so be sure to check out the packages if you want to participate in both.

The Outlets at Legends, a mall near the Sparks Marina, has announced the opening of The Phoenix, a new barbecue joint, and SolBaked Café and Bakeshop.

The arrival of The Phoenix is good news for those who lament the lack of local barbecue offerings. Rising from the ashes of another barbecue eatery, Hellfire Saloon, The Phoenix is the latest restaurant to open at The Outlets at Legends. It serves up classic barbecue fare such as ribs and pulled pork sandwiches as well as burgers, steak and seafood. The space has a 75-seat wine bar and 200-seat dining room that includes a stage for weekly live performances.

The Outlets at Legends is owned by RED Development, a commercial real estate company specializing in mixed-use properties.

The operator of the world’s largest sportsbook in Las Vegas is expanding into Northern Nevada this year as part of a collaboration with the Legends Bay Casino project.

“We are thrilled to partner with Olympia Gaming to introduce our brand to a new part of the state,” said Derek Stevens, Circa Sports CEO. “We look forward to bringing an incredible sportsbook to the property.”

Sometimes, a whim pays off.

It did the other afternoon when I decided, as I drove by, to make a U-turn and stop by Cafe Con Papi (which a reader had alerted us to). I could use a cup of coffee, I thought. What I discovered was a family-owned spot serving Latin-style coffees, a nice change from the java usual.

Papi is just one of several places — recently opened or about to — in these latest dispatches from the local bar and restaurant front.

It may feel like summer just started, but the first day of school is already knocking at our doors.
